Hideki Yoshida (1949-2019)

Born in 1949 in Kyoto, from an early age Hideki Yoshida was fascinated by the cars he discovered in his parents’ magazines. With a textile designer father, his talent was nurtured in a prolific creative environment and he decided to study art and fashion design. After arriving in France in 1971 he began to display his first paintings in the capital’s fashion boutiques, and took part in the famous Retromobile show for the first time in 1978. Excelling at painting, Hideki Yoshida became a master of the art form in order to create sublime depictions of the most beautiful cars. Not contenting himself with simply reproducing a car, like the hyperrealists do, Hideki Yoshida hints at its charm and plays with its architecture to express emotion. The reflection, which has become his speciality, is one of the keys to understanding his work. He aims to sublimate the curves of beautiful bodywork as well as create a sense of mystery in his paintings.
